Things To See

The Building

See the stonework of the largest Norman keep in Europe and, using our interactive tablet, imagine how it would have looked. Gaze into the depths of the well, marvel at the Chapel or brave the prisons!

The Collections

Some of the most important historical finds in Britain can be found in Colchester Castle, from Celtic coin hoards to Roman statues and mosaics, medieval paintings to civil war armour.

Look out for the famous Sheepen Cauldron, a huge and mysterious vessel from the Bronze Age, and the hastily hidden Fenwick Hoard of silver and gold jewellery from Roman Britain.

The Roman Vaults + Castle Roof

Take one of our guided tours to discover even more of Colchester Castle!

Head down into the Roman Vaults, the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, before ascending the Great Stairs to see a stunning view of Colchester from the Castle roof.

Our Replica Ballista

Created by Len Morgan and brought to life by Motion Mapping, enjoy a bit of target practice!

Support our work whilst firing at the Castle wall, as proceeds from this incredible interactive go to the Colchester Museums Development Foundation.

Tour Guides

Our guide will take you down through 2,000 years of history to the Roman Vaults, the foundations of the Temple of Claudius. You will then travel up the Great Stairs before seeing the unrivalled view of Colchester from the Castle roof.

Tours run throughout the day and can be booked on arrival, subject to availability. Tickets cost £4.25 per adult and £2.50 per child after admission to the Castle.

Interactive Tablets

Our interactive tablets are packed with goodies from mini games, to photos and augmented reality showing how some of the Castle spaces might have originally appeared. Simply look out for our tablet signs throughout the Castle for bonus content.
