Attraction Information

Abberton Reservoir Nature Reserve is a premier birdwatching destination in Europe, renowned as a sanctuary for diverse waterfowl species.

This vast water body is strategically located near east-coast migration routes, providing a restful retreat for thousands of wild ducks, swans, and other water birds. Annually, up to 40,000 birds such as Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Coot, and Black-headed Gull grace this site, offering an impressive spectacle for nature enthusiasts.

Experience unique sights such as Cormorants nesting in trees—a rare occurrence in Britain that began here in 1981. The reservoir also serves as a crucial molting site during late summer, where swans and ducks shed and renew their feathers in safety, momentarily unable to fly. Additionally, the adjacent farmlands enrich the biodiversity, hosting thousands of golden plovers and migratory geese and swans in the winter. For birdwatchers, Abberton is a treasure trove of rare sightings during the colder months and migration periods.

Visitors are invited to stroll through our nature reserve and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the reservoir from our three accessible bird hides. The paths and viewing areas offer a perfect opportunity to witness the majesty of Abberton Reservoir and its avian visitors in a tranquil setting.
