About Durham Cathedral
Explore one of Europe’s finest Norman buildings, Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Families can marvel at the breathtaking architecture, discover the tombs of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede, and explore the beautiful cloisters (famous for Harry Potter filming!). Engage children by looking for carved details, stained glass stories, or joining a family-friendly tour. The ‘Open Treasure’ exhibition offers interactive displays (charge applies). Climbing the tower (charge applies, age/height restrictions) rewards with stunning city views. While entry to the Cathedral is free, its scale and history offer a powerful, educational, and awe-inspiring experience.
Opening hours
Cathedral: Monday – Saturday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Sunday: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM (for general visiting, services run outside these times). Open Treasure & Tower: Check website for specific times and closures.
