About Panacea Museum

Uncover the fascinating story of a unique religious community, the Panacea Society, which was based in Bedford for nearly a century. Housed in beautiful Victorian buildings within the ‘Garden of Eden’ they created, the museum explores the Society’s history, beliefs, and the life of their leader, Mabel Barltrop. While the subject matter is quite specific, the preserved buildings, tranquil gardens, and unusual story offer an intriguing visit for older children and adults interested in social history. It’s a quirky and well-presented free museum offering a different perspective on Bedford’s past.
