The Silver Swan at The Bowes Museum

Step into a world of wonder with one of the most famous automata in history — the Silver Swan. This life-size, clockwork marvel dates back to 1773 and features over 2,000 moving parts, including shimmering crystal rods, a graceful neck of 113 rings, and a flowing glass pool with silver fish. As music plays, the Swan elegantly turns, preens, and dips its beak into the water — a magical mechanical performance that has amazed audiences for over 250 years.

🕑 Catch the performance!
The Silver Swan performs every day at 2pm, with an additional showing at 11:45am during school holidays and bank holidays. It’s an unmissable highlight for families, art lovers, and curious minds alike.

Originally the star of the Paris International Exhibition of 1867, the Swan has been lovingly restored by expert horologists after 1,500+ hours of conservation work — and now it’s dazzling visitors once again at The Bowes Museum.
